Yes, if you attempt to speak without instantly achieving this one thing, you fail. That one thing is a condition, it’s a state of being, specifically, the state of being of your audience. It’s called engagement.
Without engaging your audience right away, you’ve failed. Your audience is turned off, often with no clear path to reviving them. The deaf ears are now yours!

Generally, your options for immediate engagement are 1) comedy 2) shock 3) intrigue or 4) truth. Whichever you choose, it’s also important that you execute your tactic well.
I’ll give you a sneak peak of a formula I hope to copyright. Unless you’re working with an very limited amount of time, and for strictly promotional purposes, whatever you do, please don’t begin your speech with “Hi, my name is blah, blah”. These words can turn your audience off right away, especially for lengthier talks.
